I think the campus is just beautiful, you know. It still is, you know. It's that Spanish influence, the stucco and the, and the stone and the brick and, and the trees. You know, it's an oasis, and it's just a pleasure to, to just walk around, you know. Um... And that has not changed. It's, it's held itself with that same feeling.

So while I regretted not attending a single football game or basketball game that I wish I could have, I just didn't have the luxury to do it, the magic happened as soon as that door closed. Actually, before that. It was a warm reception. It was an opportunity for learning. It was a celebration of, "Hey, you can do it." So I had a great student experience, although it might be different than the traditional student attending all the incredible intramural events that you have, athletics, all the arts, performances. Just, uh, it's, um, there's a dynamic quality of life for students here at the university.

So I think the, the, my experiences at Texas A&I was really the building blocks that helped me launch my life. And, uh, because in a, in a small high school, you don't have many ventured-out activities and, uh, I think about my grandsons and granddaughters today, and they've taken trips to Europe and Greece and different places, uh, on academic learning experiences. And, uh, of course, we didn't know what that was, and if we did, we wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway.

I loved going to the football games. I loved being part of the school spirit. I love that it felt like a family. Like, I remember the, I forgot, I think his name was Danny, but he was the, the financial aid, the person who ran financial aid, and he became a mentor and a friend. And so I just remember, like, hanging out with all of these fun people and learning from them and, um, going to games and just having a ton of school spirit and being really proud to be here. Um, I remember not wanting to go home on the weekends, that I wanted to stay here and hang out.

There's a place for hard work. You, you don't have to be brilliant. It's nice if you are, um, but there's a place for hard work and perseverance. Um, just put your head down and get after what you're doing, do it to the very best of your ability, probably stumble a few times, back up, take another look at it, and put your head down again. Uh, that has worked for me and it's worked for a number of people that, that I've worked with. Uh, just plain hard work and, and getting back up.

Uh, that's a funny story. I came to Texas A&I on a basketball scholarship. Uh, after about two years and running into people that a- a- actually play basketball, I decided I wasn't any good at that, but I still stayed on scholarship. Uh, the joke is, I then thought I'd become a lover. I wasn't good at that either. Uh, but then I found ROTC, and, uh, they were giving $50 a month for, uh, for stipends, and that would keep my car in gas. So I joined ROTC, and, uh, uh, since then, I never worked a day in my life.

I stayed in Martin Hall, and I was also a resident advisor at Martin Hall, and I loved it there. It was the... It was a co-ed and the football players were on one side and we were on the other, and mostly it was a sorority, uh, uh, dorm. And, um, I was in charge of the Zeta Wing, which was not a good wing to be in charge of because of the fact that the guys, uh, the football players would come in and raid the dorm, and they would penny lock the resident advisor in the... inside the room where they couldn't get out, and it was horrible.

Um, it was far enough, far enough away from home that I could say I was not gonna commute. And, uh, not so far that, um... And it was, it was relatively inexpensive. I mean, I, you know, I looked at other schools in Texas and, and it would have cost more money and, and I didn't have the money and, and they didn't have the money, and they had four more kids. Uh, and I didn't want to be a burden. Um, and, um, my aunt had gone to school here, so I mean, I knew of the university and, um, back then it was called Texas A&I University.
